La littérature haïtienne occupe une grande place sur la scène internationale. Les auteurs haïtiens sont lus sur tous les continents. Ils participent à des rencontres en Martinique, à Paris et à New York. En même temps, Haïti accueille de plus en plus d'écrivains étrangers ainsi que des manifestations littéraires. Mais, en règle générale, ces activités littéraires impliquent toujours la même poignée d'auteurs publiant principalement à l'étranger. De retour en Haïti après ses études aux Etats-Unis, Nadève Ménard se rend compte que ses étudiants lisent surtout les écrivains vivant et publiant principalement en Haïti. Entre les deux littératures, la différence n'est pas seulement au niveau des auteurs et des livres considérés, mais aussi des thèmes. La critique étrangère considère l'exil comme le thème dominant la littérature haïtienne, alors qu'en Haïti même, ce sont des thèmes universels qui sont évoqués et discutés, comme la violence, l'amour, la sexualité, la ville... C'est cette littérature que le présent ouvrage expose dans sa diversité, en s'arrêtant sur les années 1986 à 2006, la première date ayant représenté un tournant majeur dans la société haïtienne. L'objectif de ce livre est ainsi de donner une large perspective de la littérature haïtienne contemporaine et d'y inclure autant d'écrivains que possible. Même après le séisme du 12 janvier 2010, la littérature haïtienne, comme le pays, continue de vivre.
