En consacrant un premier dossier à Halbwachs, la revue est fidèle au projet pluridisciplinaire qui l'anime. En effet, à une époque où ces frontières disciplinaires sont encore peu précises et où les débats en ce sens sont particulièrement intenses, Maurice Halbwachs (1877-1945) n'a cessé de dialoguer avec des psychologues, des économistes, des historiens, des démographes et des statisticiens. Dès lors, étudier son œuvre dans son contexte, c'est éclairer parfois tout autant l'histoire de ces autres disciplines. Cela étant, Halbwachs est l'un des représentants les plus importants de l'école durkheimienne de sociologie. Avec Mauss, Granet, Simiand, Lévy-Bruhl, Bouglé et quelques autres, il a fortement contribué au maintien de la sociologie dans l'université française durant l'entre-deux guerres. Avec eux, il a également prolongé sans le figer l'héritage intellectuel de Durkheim, à travers des recherches très importantes sur la mémoire collective, le suicide, les comportements économiques et plus largement les façons de vivre dans les différentes classes sociales. De surcroît, il n'a pas cessé de s'intéresser aux autres traditions sociologiques, en particulier aux travaux de l'école de Chicago, à l'œuvre de Pareto et, plus encore, à la sociologie allemande (on ignore généralement qu'il est le principal introducteur de Weber dès la fin des années 20). C'est l'ensemble de ces aspects de l'histoire des sciences humaines qu'abordent les contributeurs de ce dossier : Marie Jaisson, Jean-Christophe Marcel, Olivier Martin, Laurent Mucchielli, Philippe Steiner, et Christian Topalov. Le dossier est complété par un document inédit et exceptionnel du point de vue de l'histoire institutionnelle et la sociologie des réseaux puisqu'il s'agit du récit par Halbwachs de sa campagne pour l'élection au Collège de France en 1943-1944.
